What You Can Host

Your Perl scripts, from the oldest to the most modern

Perl has powered a good part of the web for 30 years. Here is what our customers host most often.

CGI

Existing CGI scripts

Forms, guestbooks, internal tools, or homegrown apps: your .cgi and .pl scripts keep running, with no rewrite.

Framework

Mojolicious and Dancer2

Small web apps and APIs in modern Perl, run as CGI. Mojolicious detects this mode automatically.

Cron

Automation

Reports, imports and exports, website monitoring, sending emails: your scripts run on their own, at the time you choose.

Data

Text and file processing

Perl's historic strength: log analysis, CSV, XML, or JSON conversion, data cleanup with regular expressions.

Deployment

Put a Perl script online in 4 steps

Whether you're moving an old CGI script or launching a Mojolicious app, the process is the same.

  1. Install the modules you need

    In cPanel, open Perl Modules and install the CPAN modules your script uses (for example Mojolicious). CGI, DBI, and DBD::mysql are already installed.

  2. Upload your script

    Upload it to public_html or cgi-bin via SFTP, SSH / Rsync, or the cPanel File Manager, with Unix line endings (LF), not Windows ones (CRLF).

  3. Check the first line and permissions

    The first line must be #!/usr/bin/perl, and the file must have 755 permissions. These are the two most common causes of a 500 error.

  4. Test and check the logs

    Open the script's address in your browser. If something goes wrong, perl -c checks the syntax over SSH or in the cPanel Terminal, and the cPanel error log shows the exact cause.

app.cgi — Mojolicious example
#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;
# Modules installed with Perl Modules (cPanel):
# replace myaccount with your username
use lib '/home/myaccount/perl5/lib/perl5';
use Mojolicious::Lite -signatures;

get '/' => sub ($c) {
  $c->render(json => { message => 'Hello from Vtiny Hosting' });
};

# Detects CGI mode automatically
app->start;

Twice-Daily Backups

30 days of backups you can restore yourself from cPanel: scripts, modules, and databases.

Shared or VPS?

Is shared Perl hosting right for your project?

We'd rather be clear from the start: here's what works very well with us, and what's better suited to a dedicated server.

Ideal for

  • Existing CGI scripts to move from a former host
  • Web forms and tools: contact, sign-up, calculators, search
  • Business apps: small Mojolicious or Dancer2 apps, client portals
  • Automation: reports, imports, monitoring, sending emails
  • Data processing: logs, CSV, XML, or JSON files

Better on a VPS

  • Always-on PSGI servers: Starman, Hypnotoad, high-traffic Catalyst apps
  • mod_perl and apps that depend on it
  • Daemons and always-on processes: bots, message queues, network servers
  • Root access, multiple Perl versions, or specific system libraries

Frequently Asked Questions

Perl hosting questions

Which Perl version is available?

Perl 5.32, on every plan, with the most common modules already installed: CGI, DBI, DBD::mysql, JSON, LWP, Template, XML::LibXML, and more.

Can I install CPAN modules?

Yes. From cPanel, the Perl Modules tool installs the CPAN modules of your choice in your account (in ~/perl5), without administrator rights. Then add use lib with that path at the top of your script: cPanel shows the exact line to copy.

How are my Perl scripts run?

As CGI: each request starts your script, which returns the page and then exits. It's simple, reliable, and perfect for existing scripts, forms, and small apps. mod_perl isn't available.

Can I use Mojolicious or Dancer2?

Yes, in CGI mode, after installing them with Perl Modules: Mojolicious detects this mode automatically, and Dancer2 works with Plack. It's ideal for a small app or an API with moderate traffic. For an always-on PSGI server (Starman, Hypnotoad), a VPS is a better fit.

Will my old CGI script work?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. Check the first line of the script (#!/usr/bin/perl), give it 755 permissions, save it with Unix line endings, and install the modules it uses. If you get a 500 error, the cPanel error log shows the exact cause.

Can I run scheduled Perl scripts?

Yes, with cPanel cron jobs: reports, file processing, data backups, or sending emails, at the frequency of your choice.

Which plan should I choose for Perl scripts?

All plans have the same server power. Perl scripts take very little space: the Nano plan (750 MB) is often enough. Choose the Micro or Vtiny plan if you store data, uploaded files, or several sites.

Other Technologies

The same account runs your other projects too

Perl scripts, a PHP site, and a Python API? They all live side by side on the same plan.
